Student Accommodation

While a student is considering which institute to apply to, it is important to also consider the accommodation options and costs involved.  With Canada's population growing rapidly in the last few years due to increasing number of international students and immigrants, the supply of affordable homes has not been able to keep pace with the demand.  This year, many international students have faced problems in getting accommodation close to their institute or with reasonable rent.  Therefore, it might be a good idea to first ensure that accommodation is easily available in the city you select before applying for admission to the institute of your choice.

Double Room

International students can choose from on-campus and off-campus accommodation options.  On-campus options include shared dormitories or shared student housing.  Off-campus options include private student apartments on rent.

For first-year students, on-campus housing is the most convenient option as it is the most affordable and it allows you to settle down in the university faster.  A lot of services such as housekeeping and maintenance are taken care of by the university and facilities are available for laundry and meals.  Since on-campus housing is limited, many students may have to look at off-campus housing.

Off-campus housing includes furnished or unfurnished accommodation.  A more recent trend is homestays where students get to stay with a Canadian family.  This allows an international student to experience the Canadian culture and cuisine.  Homestays are more affordable and give you the comfort of home and support in a new environment.
