WORK ON & OFF CAMPUS

International students who are enrolled in a full-time program in a Designated Learning Institute are eligible to work on campus or off campus.  This allows students to not just earn money but also gain work experience which would help them if they apply for immigration.

Teaching English

ON CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT

To work on campus, a student does not require a work permit as long as they have a valid study permit and a Social Insurance Number (SIN). The student can only start working once their classes start. 

On campus, the students have a number of options for employment:

  • Work as a Teaching Assistant with a faculty member

  • Work for a student organization

  • Run your own business on campus like a coffee shop

  • Work for a private contractor who provides services on campus

Bringing the Food

OFF CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT

As an International Student with a valid study permit, you are allowed to work off campus for up to 40 hours a week during the semester.  For this, the student needs to be enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program in a Designated Learning Institute or a vocational training program in Quebec.  In addition, the program must be at least six months long and should lead to a diploma, certificate or degree.  Th study permit must mention that you can work off campus.  As with on campus employment, one needs to have a Social Insurance Number to be able to start work. 

Off campus, the students have a number of options for employment:

  • Work as an Uber driver

  • Work in a hotel in any department.

  • Work as an Au pair or Nanny

  • Work in a Call Centre

  • Work as a Delivery Driver

  • Work in a store as an assistant

  • Work as an office assistant

 

Internship or Coop Programs

Some academic programs also require students to gain work experience as part of the program. In addition to the study permit, the student must also apply for a work permit.  The institute must provide a letter stating that the academic program includes an internship requirement.
